Meet Roberta Barnes-Shihan

I am Gendai Reiki-ho Shihan (master instructor/ teacher of high standing), Komyo Reiki Kai Shihan, and  Gendai Reiki Healing Kyokai Shihan, Master Herbalist, Author and Speaker.

Besides the universe helping me to connect with the three Reiki Shihans, one Canadian and two Japanese, perfect for my Usui Reiki Ryoho journey, I was first given a reason to search for natural healing modalities that led me to Usui Reiki Ryoho. Reiki.

At a time in my life when I was enjoying the wonderment of my son’s and daughter’s beautiful early years of life, my life ended.  My bloody body was left lying in the middle of a back country road after a car accident.

Nevertheless, I was extremely fortunate.  Somone driving home to dinner not only stopped but did what he had been trained to do when you find a body not breathing or anything; I was breathing when the ambulance arrived.  Emergency surgeries, and months in different hospitals followed, but the healing did not end there.

In those months in the hospitals, I learned the importance of determination, and focusing on solutions rather than what we are told we cannot do. <finding your solutions

Medical professionals had done all that they could do, but my healing to continue had not ended. I began studying different natural healing modalities.  I focused on Western styles of Usui Reiki Ryoho.  I completed what is called master level in Western Reiki; no one can master universal energy and Usui Sensei did not refer to himself as master of the spiritual healing art he created so I continued to search.

In 1999 a Canadian Usui Reiki teacher introduced me to styles coming directly from Japan, the birthplace of Usui Reiki Ryoho.  I focused on learning Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai.  <what is Reiki>

In 2002 I  completed the Gokuikaiden level (teacher’s level) in Gendai Reiki-ho in-person with it’s founder Hiroshi Doi.  Doi Sensei joined the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai in 1993.  Because I teach Gendai Reiki-ho as Doi Sensei taught me (except in English), and Gendai Reiki Healing Kyokai Shihan, I understood what Hippocrates quote,  The physician treats, but nature heals.”.

In 2003 I completed the teacher’s level in Komyo Reiki Kai in-person with it’s founder Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto. Hyakuten Sensei is also a Japanese Buddhist monk. Some people have changed the name to Komyo Reiki Do (Do means path), but my certificate says Komyo Reiki Kai.

I honor Doi Sensei and Hyakuten Sensei by teaching Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai in the essence in which I learned in-person from each of them. I enjoy seeing students and clients healing in mind, body, and spirit through the piece of universal energy flowing to where is needed to bring healing balance and harmony.

Years after my accident I was told by an extremely knowledgeable neurosurgeon that I function beyond what medical science says is possible for a person with my injuries. Styles honoring Usui Reiki Ryoho as created help each life to heal in the best way for him or her at that junction in time.

I am now able to enjoy helping others to not only return to, or maintain, his or her natural state of wellbeing in their whole/complete self, but to uncover his or her true universal self.  We are each Born with skills, but in sometimes those skills remain dormant.

Following are how some of my students describes me; when they say she, they are referring to me, Roberta Barnes.

“You are very knowledgeable about the history of Reiki and the empowerments you gave were powerful.”  Lynn

“She is truly the Real Deal, unpolluted and pure, a fountain of love and harmony.  If you are truly looking for a pure honest and factual learning experience then you need to spend time with Roberta. Her personal emanates Love, Harmony. Knowledge and a Deep respect for all. — Nerine

“I appreciated Roberta Barnes’ understanding, clarity, extensive knowledge and ability to share it.” Rockie

“Roberta is very knowledgeable, makes lessons easy to understand and she has great energy.”  Joshua

My healing studio Natural Healing & Learning Center is nestled in nature. Because of the Gendai Reiki-ho, Komyo Reiki Kai and meditation that are taught and practiced in my healing studio, people often feel the positive energy as soon as they enter the building. My last two dogs sometimes insisted that we go inside when we went on walks near the building.

In the years since I began leaning Usui Reiki Ryoho I have seen how nature and Usui Reiki complement each other. <read more>

My original guided meditations, as well my published children’s book What Tail? by Roberta R. Barnes  are enhanced by the Usui Reiki that flows through me at all times and in all places.

The following is a client’s evaluation of my original guided meditations.

Roberta’s meditations are wonderful. They have brought me a lot of insight and understanding”. — Paula

One form of meditation I teach and mention in my Finding Your Solutions CD, I learned from my father when I was just a little girl. He also taught me that if you are always looking behind, you can miss the best of things that are happening right in front of you Now. <read more>

Long before the law of attraction became popular my mother taught me that the vibrations you put out will come back to you in some way.  My Godmother showed me how positive vibrations from the heart (place of true knowledge) are more valuable than any material items.  My childhood and then the years I lived in Canada were the steppingstones to the Japanese styles of Usui Reiki Ryoho I now teach, practice, and live today.

I began learning about and using herbs in the 1970s and 1980s while living in Canada.   I completed my Family herbalist, Consultant herbalist, and Master Herbalist each with high honors early in this century in United States.  Herbs are another complementary natural way of healing, which can be enhanced when Usui Reiki is flowing to them. <Healing Herbs>

Shortly after I opened my healing studio a local newspaper published — “Roberta R. Barnes practices Traditional Japanese styles of Usui Reiki Ryoho, which have not been altered by adding in things from other practices. She has been teaching Usui Reiki Ryoho for over sixteen years, and helps students understand that a piece of the source requires only that you bench your thinking mind and ego and trust in universal wisdom.
She has been teaching meditation and giving original guided meditations  journeys for discovery and healing since 2003.  In 2010 she began offering unique guided meditation workshops such as Down the Rabbit Hole. Usui Reiki always flows through her, so offering a Reiki healing session while doing a guided meditation for healing was a natural progression for the guided meditations she offers.”

Living in both the United Stated and Canada, I was introduced to various ways of healing mind, body and spirit. When reviewing my notes and all the books from other healing modalities, I find myself constantly saying,  Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai do that without any props or fuss. <simple yet profound>

My students and clients are important to me.  Following are a few more of their comments.

Roberta is non-judgmental. She creates an atmosphere of safety and acceptance whereby a student can express innermost experiences and truly benefit from the Japanese Usui Reiki work. She brings her experience of life, which is extensive, to the work.  Coupled with this and her complete trust in Reiki, any student of hers would experience profound growth.  Gassho” — Lorraine

“You are a joy to listen to.  Knowledgeable, compassionate and light hearted”. Karl

“To those of you who are thinking of enlightening your lives for the better, I would recommend taking classes from Roberta R. Barnes I have taken Shoden (level 1), Okuden (level 2), and just completed Shinpiden (level 3) in Gendai Reiki-ho.  It is hard for me to express to others what has happened within me and around me after completing each level . . .  <read more of what Patty wrote >

I was also fortunate to be able to attend the URRI 2002 international conference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with approximately eighty other Usui Reiki Shihans from around the world. At that conference Doi Sensei and Hyakuten Sensei shared with me those three powerful words that I repeat in my manuals and verbally in my classes.  I sense Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai as yin and yang, which is the beautiful balance that I brought into my life through those studies and daily practice.

Experience natural healing energy

Life has taught me that learning to again do those things sometimes taken for granted, such as walking, requires tapping into resources of your whole-self and beyond.  Exercises in my Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai classes can help you to do that.  <read more>

The awareness you can gain through Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai allows you to experience those small yet powerful rays of sunshine, and smiles tucked beneath leaves that in the fast lane of life are often overlooked. One of my favorite Japanese words I introduce in classes is best translated as awareness without ego.

The same as most other Usui Reiki Ryoho practitioners and teachers I have those certificates I am most honored to share hanging on the walls of my healing studio, Natural Healing & Learning Center.
