I am Gendai Reiki-ho Shihan (master instructor) and Komyo Reiki Kai Shihan;, Master Herbalist and Author. These Japanese Reiki styles that I teach, practice and live I enjoy weaving into all areas of my life each day. I was first introduced to Usui Reiki in the 1980s, studied Western Reiki in the 1990s and have been practicing natural healing for over forty years.
I begin by saying Gendai Reiki Ho & Komyo Reiki Kai because since 2002 that has been my focus.
I am blessed to have studied Gendai Reiki-ho directly under Hiroshi Doi and by doing so I am also Gendai Reiki Healing Kyokai Shihan. I studied Komyo Reiki Kai directly under Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto. Most importantly, I honor Doi Sensei and Hyakuten Sensei by teaching Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai as I learned in their classes. The Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai manuals that I give to my students in each level are a combination of Doi-Sensei’s and Hyakuten Sensei’s manuals, the notes that I took in classes and questions I asked on breaks.
In the 1990s I completed the level called master teacher in others styles of Usui Reiki Ryoho and moved on to first study Gendai Reiki-ho under a Shihan who had studied directly under Hiroshi Doi. In 2002 I studied directly under Hiroshi Doi for review to make certain I would be teaching in the way that embraces the essence as Usui Sensei taught. The extensive knowledge of my Canadian Usui Reiki Shihan who practices following the essence of Mikao Usui’s spiritual practice lead me to Hiroshi Doi and Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto.
I studied under Doi Sensei and Hyakuten Sensei for their knowledge and experience with Mikao Usui’s spiritual practice that follows the essence in which it was founded. I focused on every word each spoke (Doi Sensei’s was through a gifted translator) in classes and asked questions after classes. I share those with my students at the appropriate level the factual history Doi Sensei sahred in class, which were where so enriching.
I do not call myself a Reiki master simply because no one can master the universe or Mikao Usui’s original spiritual practice. I am Shihan (master instructor/advanced teacher) of Japanese styles of Usui Reiki Ryoho. What I completed under both Hiroshi Doi and Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto is often referred to as updated teacher’s/instructor’s level.
One student describes me in this way —-“You are very knowledgeable about the history of Reiki and the empowerments you gave were powerful.” Lynn
Other students wrote. . . “She is truly the Real Deal, unpoluted and pure, a fountain of love and harmony. If you are truly looking for a pure honest and factual learning experience then you need to spend time with Roberta. Her personal emanates Love, Harmony. Knowledge and a Deep respect for all. — Nerine
“I appreciated Roberta Barnes’ understanding, clarity, extensive knowledge and ability to share it.” Rockie
On other pages you will see other quotes that some of my students have written in their evaluations and given me permission to print.
I had been practicing various forms of natural healing prior to studying Usui Reiki Ryoho. I have learned through personal experience and seen through my students and clients that the healing of mind, body and spirit together with this piece of universal energy we have come to call Usui Reiki can be described as either amazing or awesome.
I also give original guided meditation journeys that often take a person into an event in his or her current past or a past life, and I give herb consultations. Usui Reiki flows through me always, so the guided meditations and herb consultations are surrounded by Reiki light (the universal vibrations of unconditional love and harmony).
The following is a description of what one of my clients said about my original guided meditatins.
“Roberta’s meditations are wonderful. They have brought me a lot of insight and understanding”. — Paula
While the manuals I write for each of the four levels in Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai are factual, as well as articles I’ve written on Usui Reiki Ryoho and meditation, I am able to shift gears when appropriate. I wrote columns for a daily newspaper in Canada, and in 2014 with the aid of Usui Reiki flowing through me, my children’s fantasy book ‘What Tail?‘ was published. While “What Tail?’ is fantasy, the influence Japanese Reiki is evident in the subtle messages of accepting differences in others and celebrating our own, which is woven within the unique animals and their unusual adventures. <read more about What Tail? >
My healing studio, Natural Healing & Learning Center, which I opened in 2002, is nestled a small certified wildlife habitat in Central Maine USA. Because I studied directly under Hiroshi Doi it is certified by Gendai Reiki Kyokai.. My healing studio is the perfect relaxing environment for teaching and practicing Japanese RGendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kaiiki, herb consultations and giving my original guided meditations.
While some forms of natural healing I have studied involve rituals and material objects my Japanese Reiki classes and sessions following the simple yet profound essence of MIkao Usui. Many distorted stories have been created over the years, but none take from the beauty of the original spiritual practice Mikao Usui founded. <read about What is Reiki>
The two lineages that are my direct path to what I teach include Mikao Usui the founder, Kan’ichi Taketomi (3rd president of the URR Gakkai), Kimiko Koyama (6th president of the URR Gakkai), Hiroshi Doi (joined the URR Gakkai in 1993), Mikao Usui the founder, Churjiro Hayashi, Chiyoko Yamaguchi (began studying at the age of 17), and Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto (a Japanese Buddhist monk). I have other Reiki lineages, but the two thorugh Hiroshi Doi and Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto I am most honored to shsare.
Because Natural Healing & Learning Center is a place where Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai and meditation are taught and practiced you can feel the positive energy as soon as you enter the building. Some people feel that shift in energy as soon s they drive or walk in the driveway.
I discovered how wonderful it feels to help others, when as a young girl I cared for injured animals and birds; as a teenager I was a candy striper at a local hospital. Helping others in this manner showed me the importance of healing mind, body and spirit together. I learned as a teenager while working in the local hospital that physical healing is not enough, especially with traumas.
One form of meditation I teach, and mention in one of my guided meditations on Finding Your Solutions, I learned from my father at a very young age. Long before the law of attraction became popular my mother taught me that the vibrations you put out come back to you in some way. My God mother showed me how positive vibrations from the heart (place of true knowledge) are more valuable than material items.
As I began my Japanese Reiki studies under my Canadian Japanese Reiki Shihan, I learned that factual history is more amazing than distorted history, and experienced the amazing strength within belief and trust in the universal wisdom that comes with Usui Reiki. My awareness of the importance of trust in MIkao Usui’s original spiritual practice and expanding beyond training wheels such as symbols increased as I expanded my studied in Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai.
With daily practice my journey in the spiritual practice Mikao Usui founded in 1922 will never end. I am constantly experiencing the wonderment of being a conduit without ego of universal unconditional love and harmony. As Shihan I enjoy guiding those who are willing to learn as ways Usui Sensei said, “to achieve personal perfection”. When you are in balance and with harmony you help to heal all around you; when you heal yourself you heal your family, your group, your community, and our world.
I began learning about and using herbs in the 1970s and 1980s while living in Canada; I completed my family, consultant, and master herbalist each with high honors after moving back to the USA. Herbs are another complementary natural way of healing, which can be enhanced with Usui Reiki simply flowing to them.
I enjoy helping each person to not only return to his or her natural state of well-being in mind, body and spirit, but encouraging each person to cherish his or her uniqueness. There are metaphors for this in my children’s book ‘What Tail?’.
A few years ago a local newspaper published – “Roberta R. Barnes practices Traditional Japanese styles of Usui Reiki Ryoho, which have not been altered by adding in things from other practices. She has been teaching Usui Reiki Ryoho for over sixteen years, and helps students understand that a piece of the source requires only that you bench your thinking mind and ego and trust in universal wisdom.
She has been teaching meditation and giving original guided meditations journeys for discovery and healing since 2003. In 2010 she began offering unique guided meditation workshops such as Down the Rabbit Hole. Usui Reiki always flows through her, so offering a Reiki healing session while doing a guided meditation for healing was a natural progression for the guided meditations she offers.”
I was lucky enough to have been blessed with three Wonderful Usui Reiki Shihans who not only all have a close lineage to Mikao Usui, but embrace the essence of the Japanese tradition of Usui Sensei’s original spiritual practice. My exact lineage for Gendai Reiki Ho and Komyo Reiki Kai are in the manuals I have written for my students. One of my Gendai Reiki-ho lineages (I have two) and my Komyo Reiki Kai lineage, (master instructor or advanced teacher), have only three Japanese Reiki Shihans between Mikao Usui and me.
Most importantly, I honor those lineages and do not add in things from other healing modalities or messages given to me in meditations and visions
While the styles of Western Reiki that I first studied were good stepping stones for me at that time, I found it easier to resonate with the piece of universal energy we call Usui Reiki when I learned to let go of training wheels (the tag Hiroshi Doi used for symbols) and trust in the universal wisdom that comes with Usui Reiki.
Living in both the United Stated and Canada, I was introduced to various ways of healing mind, body and spirit. When reviewing my notes and the books from other healing modalities, I find myself constantly saying, Japanese Usui Reiki does that, but without any props or fuss it is much easier and faster.
My students and clients are important to me and I welcome all their comments.
One of my students describes me as . . . “Roberta is non-judgmental. She creates an atmosphere of safety and acceptance whereby a student can express innermost experiences and truly benefit from the Japanese Usui Reiki work. She brings her experience of life, which is extensive, to the work. Coupled with this and her complete trust in Reiki, any student of hers would experience profound growth. Gassho” — Lorraine
Another student wrote. . . “To those of you who are thinking of enlightening your lives for the better, I would recommend taking classes from Roberta R. Barnes. <read more on my page learning Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai >
I sense Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai as yin and yang, so once you have studied a level in either style with me I offer a discount for the comparable level in the other style. I teach all four levels in both Gendai Reiki Ho and Komyo Reiki Kai. I also teach Pre-Shoden for children which is a basic 4 hour class with only one empowerment.
I am pleased to be able to say that I have been approved by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage & Body work (NCBTMB) as a continuing education Approved Provider.
I was fortunate to be able to attend the URRI 2002 conference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with approximately eighty other Usui Reiki Shihans from around the world. At that conference Doi Sensei and Hyakuten Sensei shared with me those three powerful words that I repeat in my manuals and verbally in my classes.
The photo of me to you right was taken by one of my students in the herb garden beside my healing studio. Healing herbs in their various forms enhanced by Usui Reiki are wonderful in many ways. <read healing herbs>
Besides the universe helping me to connect with the three Reiki Shihans perfect for my journey, I have been given hands-on learning experiences. Beginning at the age of 4 my average week included classes and practice in ballet, Tap, and later Spanish and ballroom dancing. I’ve climbed mountains, lead my cheerleading squad onto the floor and enjoyed other physical activities.
When I had begun the years of enjoying the wonderment of my son’s and daughter’s lives a severe auto accident required more healing than I had ever imagined. Moving forward in life with multiple broken bones, two spinal cord injuries and more after a man found my body in the middle of the road “not breathing or anything” (his words) required that I focus on complementary medicine after MDs had done all that they could. In the months following my accident I learned the importance of focusing on solutions, and opening up and seeing what was around me in a new way .
When you look beyond your problems, the universe shows you doors that you can open, and when you believe in yourself (without ego) what follows is often referred to as miracles. Five months after my body was found in the road even though MDs said it would never happen I walked out of the hospital under my own power. I may have been walking like a drunk, but I was walking without a walker, crutches, or cane. In today’s world many medical professionals are adding Usui Reiki Ryoho into their toolbox in helping others to heal; I have many licensed professionals, which while they have more to offer, they do not have to change anything in practicing in the way they were trained.
Medical professionals are front line for all injuries and illnesses; as Hippocrates said “the physician treats, but nature heals”. Usui Reiki Ryoho, meditation and healing herbs are all part of nature.
Life has taught me that learning to again do those things sometimes taken for granted such as wlaking, requires tapping into resources of your whole-self and beyond; this is one of the things you can learn in Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai. <read more>
The awareness (mindfulness) you can gain through Gendai Reiki-ho and komyo Reiki kai allows you to experience those small yet powerful rays of sunshine, and smiles tucked beneath leaves, which In the fast lane of life are often overlooked. With awareness without ego you can have astonishing yet peaceful experiences that can add light to any dark corner in your life.
All Usui Reiki Ryoho practitioners and teachers will have certificates, and he or she is pleased to share with you their lineage back to MIkao Usui. Note that lineages coming through Takata Sensei will often say the style of Reiki Shiki Ryoho, which is just another way in which MIkao Usui’s original practice was referred to at one time. <What is Reiki>
I thank you for respecting the © on all the information I am sharing with you and not copying without my written permission.
Below are a few of my certificates that I am blessed to have earned. Besides other Usui Reiki Ryoho certificates, I also have Family Herbalist, Consultant Herbalist, and Master Herbalist high honors certificates from Clayton College of Natural Health.
