Japanese styles of Usui Reiki means those forms of Usui Reiki Ryoho that comes directly from Japan, and have not been altered by adding other healing modalilties.  Usui Reiki is a unique form of universal energy, universal energy cannot and has no need to be improved upon.

Mikao Usui's original purpose was for the personal and spiritual growth that would be experienced through the system he developed; "to know one’s true purpose in life and be content,to heal oneself and find one’s spiritual path, and ultimately achieve satori". 

Gendai Reiki Ho and Komyo Reiki Kai help you to learn to go beyond what your five sense can identify and bring your mind, body, and spirit into balance. 

You are shown symbols and hand positions to use as training wheels only while you are learning.  Once you resonate with universal energy you have the freedopm to set aside those training wheels.  Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki Kai embrace the essesnce of what Mikao Usui called the secret to Health and Happiness.  On the What is Reiki page you will find more basic informtation on Usui Reiki Ryoho and the learning Reiki page you will find description of each level Roberta teaches.

 Gendai Reiki-ho is a Japanese style created by Hiroshi Doi, who is a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, the  society in Japan created by Mikao Usui. While Gendai Reiki-Ho is a teaching style approved of by the Gakkai, it also reflects pieces other styles of Usui Reiki that Hiroshi Doi feels embrace Mikao Usui's essence. Gendai ReikiHo is not a new school of Reiki, but a new way to practice Usui Reiki by bringing Mikao Usui’s teachings into modern daily life.  It translates into English as, "Modern Reiki method for healing".

It would be nice to say Gendai Reiki-Ho is traditional Reiki, but there is no traditional Reiki. Mikao Usui raised three men to the level enabling each to teach his method (Usui Reiki Ryoho), and because each  person has a unique reality, those three men taught differently. The method taught within the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai is probably the closest to the way Mikao Usui practiced, but what goes on within the Gakkai is not shared with anyone that is not a member of the Gakkai.

Roberta Barnes completed the update teacher's levels in Gendai Reiki-Ho directly under Hiroshi Doi, and Komyo Reiki Kai directly under Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto. Hiroshi Doi has only 2 teachers between himself and Mikao Usui through the Gakkai. Rev Hyakuten Inamoto also has only 2 teachers between himself and Mikao Usui, through Hayashi-Sensei. 

Roberta teaches both Gendai Reiki-Ho and Komyo Reiki Kai.  The motto that Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto put with, Komyo Reiki Kai, the style he created is, "Go placidly in the midst of praise or blame".

 Roberta Barnes' way of life reflects the teachings of her three primary teachers, and pieces of other Usui Reiki styles that honor the essence of Mikao Usui's original teachings. What Roberta teaches is a wonderful complementary healing that comes from balancing the mind, body and spirit and surrounding with harmony.  In the hours of study her students discover that the spiritual practice Mikao Usui founded goes far beyond what is commonly thought of as hands-on-healing.

One of the things Roberta teaches is how to allow Usui Reiki to flow into all the atoms/molecules surrounding you.  After adding a new room to her healing Center she decided to take a photographs to send to a friend. You can see that her dog slipped into the photo, and that the camera captured something else. If you look closely you can see what is felt but not always seen with the human eye. Look closely to your left of her dog and you will see three circles. These are energy circles showing that Usui Reiki not only fills the life form opened to Reiki, but touches in a positive way the areas around her or him. 

Through Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki you can learn how to connect and weave that endless supply of universal energy into your every day life. Japanese styles of Usui Reiki Ryoho do not compete with any other healing modality; Japanese styles of Usui Reiki support and enhance other positive healing modalities. 

Another of Roberta's Usui Reiki Shihans from the 1990s, Richard Rivard, focuses on clarity, which is essential when opening up to a greater awareness on the path to enlightenment that can uncover the true universal you. This awareness happens in the space created once your pathway to universal energy is opened and you have spent hours in study and practice. In this space you learn how to transform any disharmony in mind, body or spirit back to its natural state of well being, which is commonly called healing in the way that is best for you.

 Vis medicatrix naturae (the healing power of life) is naturally inside all of us, it is affected by all that is around us, and like Ki is stronger in some then in others.  All natural abilities are enhanced through the study of Usui Reiki.  However, what has become known as an attunement is just the beginning.  As Doi-Sensei said in his class in Toronto in 2002, Reiki is like the powerful engine that attaches to the train of the self-healer moving it ahead at a greater speed and keeping it on the right track.  

  Many things can be learned from a book or in a one-day class, but the spiritual practice of Usui Reiki Ryoho is not one of these things. Each level in Usui Reiki requires time for the whole-you to blend with that which is new to you. Children that begin at a very young age blend easily with the feel of universal energy.

 None of the cells in your mind, body or spirit instantly accept and resonate with anything new, regardless of your desire, finances, ethnic background, or formal education. Nevertheless with time and your desire it can happen.

 Having a copy of Takata-Sensei’s original transcript, Roberta Barnes has an awareness of the original teachings through which many Western styles of Reiki have developed.  Because she began studying styles of Reiki developed in North America she can answer many of your questions about other styles of Reiki.  

Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki both help you to learn to look beyond the everyday chaos and bench your ego unless needed for survival.  Roberta allows each person the time needed to assimilate what he or she experiences as he or she looks more closely into the universe.

Whether you are in the public school area of your life, mid-life, or retired from a profession, learning Gendai Reiki-ho or Komyo Reiki brings the balance and harmony into your life that  benefits everything you do. Once your pathway has actually been opened, Reiki will immediately begin to flow; but how pure Reiki flows depends upon many things, which Roberta explains in her classes. Reiki is a journey on which you constantly learn and grow. Everything in our world gives off its own vibration. The form of universal energy commonly called Reiki contains the vibrations of unconditional love and harmony, the most powerful of vibrations.

Consequently, Reiki can enhance everything and requires nothing to increase its strength. This leaves the Reiki practitioner and Shihan (teacher) in a wonderful space of freedom, never having to depend upon material objects, charts in books, or anything other then trust in universal wisdom.  

The powerful backbone of Usui Reiki Ryoho teachings is the three concepts from which the Gokai (five concepts or five principles) sprouted. The Gokai reflects the Dalai Lama’s wisdom as he wrote, “confidence arising automatically and worry and anxiety diminish”. Letting go of the negative, accepting, and living in the present moment are some of the things you can learn through Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki.

A common reaction when feeling stuck is to back up, which most often results staying in one place with wheels spinning. Mikao Usui’s first awakening gave the foundation for learning how to accept where you are, and from that place move forward in the way best for you at that moment in time. If your personal experience tells you that the saying, “another door opens when one closes” is not true, perhaps you were so focused on the door that closed that you did not even notice the one that opened. Learning this spiritual practice that Mikao Usui founded helps you to focus on the now, so that you are aware of the opening doors.

Reiki has helped many people overcome some very difficult physical and emotional challenges. Reiki does not replace crisis professional medical care.  Reiki is complementary medicine, supporting other healing modalities as it promotes and speeds the healing process in the way that is best for the person/animal/bird/other life form receiving, at that junction in time.  Reiki can reduce the need for pain and other medication.

Usui Reiki Ryoho is a natural process as opposed to a cure that masks or eliminates symptoms. Reiki practitioners and Shihans (teachers) follow a different path than conventional healing modalities. Even so, all Reiki practitioners and Reiki Shihans (teachers) have one or more certificate(s) from a qualified Reiki Shihan (teacher), and can show you his or her energy and technique lineage back to Mikao Usui.  You can view some of Roberta’s certificates and energy lineages on her bio page.   Reiki Shihans are honored to tell you their lineage back to the founder, Mikao Usui; no lineage makes anyone better then anyone else, but in Reiki there is a connection between student and teacher.  

Universal energy flowing through you does not depend on movements, tones, colors, or additions of any kind. It requires a body to flow through who has been initiated (empowerment/attunement) and guided by a qualified Reiki Shihan. Once your pathway/channel has been opened you are the vessel through which universal love and harmony will always flow.

Nevertheless, like your drinking glasses that you are constantly washing, your pathway/channel must be kept clear or the universal energy flowing through can resemble pure spring water drunk from a dirty glass. Reiki unaltered and allowed to flow purely will not cause any harm of any kind.

Gendai Reiki-ho is fast becoming one of the preferred methods of Reiki coming out of Japan. Doi Hiroshi (Hiroshi Doi in English and Doi-Sensei to his students) created this style.  Being a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, Doi-Sensei's practice is seeded from the roots instilled by Mikao Usui who created that society. Gendai Reiki-ho focuses on living in a balanced harmonic way (health and happiness).

Doi-Sensei says about Gendai Reiki-ho, “Ayashiku-nai, Okashiku-nai, Muzukashiku-nai.” The English translation of this is nothing fishy, nothing odd, and nothing difficult.

Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki focus on the core or the source of both disharmony and harmony. Each time your pathway to universal energy is opened wider (empowerment/attunement) you are able to connect with more cords within the vibrations of universal unconditional love and harmony. Once your channel has been opened, Roberta focuses on helping you to resonate with the vibrations you have been opened to through numerous exercises. She teaches in a way  that frees from having to depend upon any training wheels.  Reiki symbols can be the greatest obstacle to truly knowing in your heart the form of universal energy that flows through you once your channel has been opened. You may  forget what you have memorized in your mind, but what you know in your heart stays with you.

Komyo Reiki Kai is style created by Rev. Hyakuten Inamoto; like Doi-Sensei, Hyakuten-Sensei has only two Reiki Shihans between himself and Mikao Usui. Mikao Usui only raised three out of 2000 students to the level where they could teach and open others to the form of universal energy called Reiki.

Komyo Reiki Kai's purpose is believing that underlying true happiness is physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual good health, and

	To promote a wider spread of Reiki Hands
	To encourage the use of Reiki hands – healing art in a family or at work as an effective and/or supplementary medicine (in an office where I was employed in the 1990s I would let Reiki flow to co-workers at break times; Reiki is a wonderful addition to any work place).
	To improve the mind and body and maintain optimal health by means of Reiki Ryoho practice.
	To strive on, through Reiki practice, to uplift humanity and spirituality as a Reiki practitioner so as to attain the ultimate objective of Reiki Ryoho, i.e. “the absolute INNER PEACE” or “Anshin Ritsumei” in terms of Usui-Sensei. (I explain all these terms in class.)
	To live a healthy and peaceful daily life being benefited from Reiki.

 Reflecting back on books/movies the hero/heroine often finds personal growth through the energy of love. In many cases, the hero/heroine thinks about walking away from the gift offered to him or her because the true strength/power of the energy is not recognized. Sometimes a person is too busy with modern technology to recognize the true power of universal energy. The study of Reiki over a few weeks or months gives each person the time and support to assimilate the experience so that the strength/power of universal energy can be recognized.

 If you face the palms of your hands toward each other and slowly move them back and forward, you can feel your own life force energy. When you walk barefoot or lie on the earth, and quiet your mind you can feel the earth’s form of energy. Now imagine being able to blend cords from the universal vibrations of love and harmony with these forms of energy.

Please note that every level is honorable, and every level helps you to personally grow in the way that is best for you.

If you decide to complete more than one level, you will feel a gradual yet steady rise in the potency of what flows through your body, as long as you continue to practice and your channel is kept clear. Once you can feel that pure white light flowing within and through you, you can blend it into any area of your life. This blending does not make the universal energy that flows through you any stronger/better, but it can make your life take on a positive glow.

When you are emitting positive vibrations all that is around you is touched in a positive way, and positive is attracted to you. The sculptures that Roberta Barnes allows Reiki to flow into while she is taking from the block allowing them to reveal themselves, are an example of a pleasant addition to have in a home emanating positive energy. You can learn how to allow Reiki to flow into everything positive that you do, giving yourself rewarding results in ways more powerful then money.
